As your Private Guide / Translator we will explore fantastic prehistoric cave art in Lascaux IV, plus the beautiful cave art of Rouffignac, the famous museum in Les Eyzies and the PIP plus another local prehistoric cave.

As I have worked as a custodian and guide of prehistoric cave art in 3 major sites, 2 in the Dordogne including Lascaux II, I have an indepth knowledge of this ancient and mysterious culture which I would love to share with you and will be able to point out areas and stories that the onsite guide will pass over.

Cutting through limestone cliffs, the Vezerre river winds it way through a region of France, that's is world renown for the examples of prehistoric art works. Aptly named the "Valley of Man".

A short drive from Sarlat, we visit the site of the caves of Lascaux. Discovered in 1940 by 4 local teenage boys, who followed their dog into a narrow entrance to a cavern, to discover 17, 000-year-old paintings, consisting mostly of 900 animal representations, deer, horses, cows, & bison. Here are the finest examples of art from the Upper Paleolithic period. Truly the most beautiful colourful examples of pre historic cave art in France.

The stunning new museum completed in 2016, today houses the reproduction of the famous Lascaux cave. Just 20km away at another cave we are able to admire the real art work on the walls of the cave depicting 100 wooly mammoths as they were painted, 14, 000 years ago. The day will be spent visiting prehistoric caves villages and museums, unmissable for the lovers of prehistory.

We will meet at your hotel and travel to the fascinating prehistoric cave of the 100 Mammoths in Rouffignac, where we will travel 2 kms into the cave on wonderful electric train.

With my interest and passion in prehistory I will be able to add to your visit by giving you many more interesting insights into this ancient culture.

After a delicious lunch we will visit the "sleeping beauty" Chateau des Milandes, once home of Josephine Baker, the famous singer/dancer and member of the French Resistance. Here that she lived with her 12 adopted children, "the Rainbow Tribe". I have worked here as a guide so have in depth knowledge of the visit.
There is also a wonderful display of falconery in the beautifully laid out gardens.

We will also visit the beautiful village La Roque Gageac beside the river Dordogne and travel through some stunning countryside.

We drive along rugged, unspoiled landscapes to arrive at the sacred town and the most important pilgrimage site of Rocamadour.

The first surprise is its a tiny village perched high on the side of a limestone cliff and towers majestically on limestone canyons. Since 12th century kings, Bishops Nobels and pilgrims came to visit religious sanctuaries and more especially for its Black Virgin. It is the second most visited attraction in France after Mont-Saint-Michel! climbing the main staircase leading to the church square, pilgrims and walkers discover the seven sanctuaries of Rocamadour, among which, the Unmissable, the Notre-Dame chapel or miracles chapel contains a statue of the Black Virgin dating from the 12th century.
