This private tour will take you to the oldest parts of the city, settled in Gallo-Roman times. We will visit the vestiges of the Roman era - thermal baths & an arena where gladiators combated (my favorite part - imagine the crowds roaring while the gladiators battled. !!) Along the way I share unique video reconstitutions of Paris during Roman times - a unique way to see the city. In the Middle Ages the Left Bank was occupied by religious houses such as the Abbey St Germain-des-Prés. Abbeys built universities (Sorbonne), giving rise to the name "Latin Quarter" as the language spoken by the students & clerics. In the 18th Century the area became a hotbed of Revolutionary insurgents. We will see where the Revolutionaries gathered, plotted their insurrections & invented the guillotine. We will visit a Renaissance Italian-style garden, the Pantheon and the final resting place of the city's patron saint - who organized the first prayer marathon to save Paris from the Huns, ending in the Roman arena.
- Church St Germain, the city's oldest church & beautifully restored - St Germain district : - We visit one of the most picturesque squares in the city; - And a covered passageway from the 1700s, home to the city's oldest cafe, opened in 1686, where Franklin & Jefferson drank coffee & played chess, where the French Revolutionaries plotted their insurgency, and where the guillotine was invented. - Bld St Michel : - We see the ruins of a Roman bathing complex (1st Century AD). Learn about the unique construction & history of this fabulous building. - We discover a medieval abbot's palace (built 1485) - And we walk past the Sorbonne (founded 1253) - Luxembourg Gardens, laid out by Queen Marie de Medici in 1612 - Pantheon district : - We'll see the Pantheon, final home to the nation's great - Visit to St Etienne, a late gothic church & architectural gem - Mouffetard district : we end in a roman arena (1st Century AD) Feel free to customize this itinerary to your liking
