Prehistoric Caves in the Dordogne's Vézère valley contain some of the oldest artworks known to man. Lascaux 4 is dubbed the 'Sistine Chapel of Prehistory', there are no other cave paintings that can compete with those of Lascaux's in terms of colour, size, quality and quantity. Here we find complete replica of France's most celebrated cave art. There are 147 prehistoric sites and 25 decorated caves. and we visit some of the best Les Grottes de Cougnac, This underground wonder features some of France's oldest artwork still open to the public with 60 diagrams of mammoths, goats, deer and other animals as well as rare sketches of human figures. Grotte de Rouffignac a most extensive cave systems in the Dordogne known as the Cave of the Hundred Mammoths, is made up of an 8 kilometre long network of underground galleries spread over three different levels. La Grotte du Pech Merle is in the region of the Lot. We visit the original masterpieces, The famous horses with spots and human hands.
Day 1 spend the morning at the New Museum of Lascaux at Montignac lunch in a local restaurant alongside the Vezerre River. The afternoon we take a small electric train to visit the Caves at Rouffignac to admire the 100 woolly Mammoths . The drive returns to Sarlat via Picturesque Valley of the Homme via Les Ezyies which is the centre for Prehistory, there is a museum and time permitting we can visit as well. Day 2, we venture into the neighbouring Lot Valley 2 hour drive to St Cirque La Popie and have a gentle walk along side the river before visiting the Caves at Perch Merle. traditional farmers Lunch is at a tiny Auberge way out in the country side. We return to Gourdon to Visit the Caves at Cognac. Lovely drive back along the river to Sarlat. The Tour can be changed to visit caves at Les Ezyies you may also prefer The Caves of Font De Gaume , Les Combarelles which was inhabited by Cro-Magnon people approximately 13, 000 years ago.
