The architecture in Harrar is totally different to other cities in Ethiopia due to its history with its traditional one storey houses with yards to rectangular 2 storey houses with wooden balconies which were introduced in the 19th century by Indian merchants. With 368 alleys squeezed into just one sq km, the old walled city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia is a colourful maze that begs exploration. We will explore this beautiful walled city exploring its fascinating streets and its busy markets as merchants come from surrounding countryside to sell their goods. Harrar is a fusion of different cultures and architectural styles as Harar grew into a crossroads for commerce between Africa, India and the Middle East and was a gateway for the spread of Islam into the Horn of Africa.
