Lake Ziway, known in the local language of Oromifa as Hara Dembel, is the largest lake in Ethiopia's Central Rift Valley and is home to thriving bird populations, shy hippos, and tilapia fish - delicious served grilled with lime! Five volcanic islands dot Lake Ziway's surface, with hiking trails, forests, and ancient monasteries to discover. For nature lovers, Lake Ziway offers a fantastic variety of aquatic and arboreal bird species on its islands, shoreline, and neighbouring forests. Highlights include the Sacred Ibis, Hammer Kop, and Long-tailed Starling as well as a host of endemic and near-endemic species including the Black-headed Forest Oriole, Abyssinian Catbird, Yellow Fronted Parrot, Black-winged Lovebird, Wattled Ibis, and Thick-billed Raven.
We'll leave Addis at 7 a. m. for Zeway, which will take about 2 hours. At Zeway, the trip will begin with bird watching near the shoreline marshes, followed by a cruise around the nesting grounds of Tulu Simbero, which translates to "Bird Island" in the local Oromifa language. Keep an eye out for local fishermen working on traditional reed boats! Then, make your way to Debre Sina (Mount Sinai), where you'll take a short walk to the monastery to learn about the island's history and see ancient relics and parchments. Following that, you'll be taken to an island cave system that has housed secret hermits, refugees, and the villagers' valuables. Hike through the island's rare natural forest for the best bird watching. You'll visit Wamecha, a community protected forest on the mainland, after disembarking from Debre Sina. You'll take a short hike to the top of the mountain, where you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the lake and surrounding areas. Finally, board the bus and return to Addis Abeba.
