When I was a child I used to go to the churches of Quito to hear mass. A "Espumilla "was never missing. As I passed in front of the cathedral, the legend of the Cock of the Cathedral came to my mind and when we visited San Francisco the idea was to look for the missing stone in the Atrium, it was part of a great legend of Quito. We took the opportunity to buy the food of the week in one of the colorful markets where everything smelled fresh. The city has grown but the historic center is a photograph stopped in time.

We will begin the day in the morning visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Major Square of Quito and its Cathedral.

Then, we will go to the Jesuit Church, considered the most spectacular baroque style, gold gilded church in South America. Later on, we will go to the Plaza of San Francisco and admire the Franciscan church facade.

We will continue to La Ronda, one of the signature streets of old Quito recently made famous in the U. S. by Samantha Brown's "Passport to Latin America". We will drive up to the Virgin of Panecillo statue for a spectacular view of the city. I will loan Nikon binoculars to bring interesting things up close.

We can then go on to the Middle of the World or the Teleferico (cable car) whichever you like. We will be flexible and add or subtract sites as you express preferences.

Mindo cloud forest + hummingbirds + butterflies

Mindo is a small town in the Andean foothills of Ecuador. This town was founded in 1861 and the current population is around 3000 inhabitants. Mindo is surrounded by the Mindo-Nambillo Cloud Forest; the forest is home to hundreds of species of birds and a great variety of butterflies. There are ziplines to fly over the ravines, you can go tubing in the river, and hike in the rainforest with nature guides. Mindo was recently named the Ruta de Cacao by The Ecuadorian Ministerio de Turismo.

San Francisco de Quito, the capital of Ecuador, was founded by the Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Benalcázar in 1534; which makes it the oldest capital city in South America and one of the highest capitals of the world (2, 850 masl). Due to the city's well preserved and least altered historic centre, in 1979 it was declared the first World Heritage city in the world.

Quito, or better to say Quitu (which literally means "the land of the middle"), by the end of XV century was one of the cities of the Quitu - Cara people throughout the northern highlands of current Ecuador that were invaded or added by Huayna Capac; penultimate Inca emperor who later turned it into the second capital of Tahuantinsuyo.

Once we walk inside the crater we actually have two options of difficulty that we can choose to go on, depending on your preference, and we can also do some birdwatching and observe the cloud forest on the slopes of the crater. 

This tour is normally better during the morning, as some clouds normally cover this place after 2-3 pm.
