Denmark has had a Jewish minority for centuries, but the Jewish presence in Denmark has always been small, yet extraordinary. The Danish-Jewish history always went against the European trend - from the 17th century when wealthy Sephardi Jews invited especially by the king to help boost the economy, to Danish Jews gaining citizen rights at a time where Jews were violently persecuted across Europe. During Europe's darkest times, the devastating effects of the Holocaust were minimized in Denmark, where Danes staged a secret rescue of Danish Jews. On this 3-hour walking tour we will combine the highlights of Copenhagen's general historic sights with a visit to the most significant parts of Jewish history in Copenhagen, from the synagogue and brass stones memorial for victims of the Holocaust, to the church where the Torah scrolls were hidden during the Nazi occupation. This tour focuses on Copenhagen's history and Danish-Jewish history from 17th century to present day.
TOUR INCLUDES: - Copenhagen's historic old town - Rosenborg Castle and King's Garden - The historic Round Tower - Jewish synagogue and brass stone memorial - Copenhagen Cathedral (inside visit unless there is an ongoing service) - Christiansborg Palace - Danish parliament - Royal Library Garden and Jewish Museum - Black Diamond Royal Library Outside visits to all venues unless otherwise stated. Can be combined with a visit to Dragør village and the site of the Danish-Jewish rescue during WWII, and/or the old Jewish cemetery (only in summer, not on Friday or Saturday). Please inquire for price and details. The tour can also be combined with my 'Highlights of Copenhagen' tour. Please inquire in advance if you want a combination of those two tours, as there is some overlap between them.
