Is Denmark the "socialist" country as it is being portrayed in US Presidential campaigns? Denmark is mentioned in American politics as a model for politicians like Bernie Sanders, or as a scare for others. But how does the Danish system really work? Are we socialists? Capitalists? On this tour, you will get a deep understanding of how Danish society and the political system work. It is a custom-designed tour so you could be deep into politics yourself, or travel with children whom you would like to expose to another way of life, and how to build a society. As your guide, I have a great interest and personal experience of how Denmark works. I have worked for six years as a "bureaucrat" at the Copenhagen City Hall (local political level), three years for the national government in the Ministry of Integration, and for a while at the University of Copenhagen. I love to discuss both the good and bad sides of Danish society, and I often do so when I teach Danish culture and society to newcomers to Denmark.
On our tour, we will understand Denmark but also take in some of the highlights of Copenhagen, so if this is your first time in Copenhagen, you will also get a good impression of the city! We will visit: Danish parliament Christiansborg - the center of politics in Denmark. Copenhagen City Hall - the landmark building and home of local Copenhagen governance Church of Our Lady - the city's most important church and neoclassical masterpiece - and much, much more, depending on your interests, our start location, etc. The topics will be adjusted to your interests but include: The Danish political system - and how it works in practice Local government Danish work culture (low hierarchy, informality, direct communication, etc) Religious practices and spiritual life Work-life balance and family life Daily life - "hygge", trust, one of the most "happy countries in the world", etc History - how Denmark went from a much bigger country to end up as a small, homogenous country - and answers to all your questions!
