This walking tour covers all the highlights of the UNESCO-protected old town of Split including Diocletian's Palace and all its nooks & crannies. As the centuries unfold under your feet you, we'll find out how this Roman complex from the late 3rd century AD became a small medieval settlement, then one of most important Venetian ports and finally the 2nd biggest town in modern Croatia. What I'll cover is not only historical background and stunning architecture, but also witty curiosities about the local lifestyle, the best places for photo sessions and valuable tips on how to get the most of your stay in Split. After this tour you will surely have the answers to the questions: Why are there no flies on the local fish market? Who's to blame for everything that goes wrong in the city? Why is some graffiti of Split considered art? What kind of coffee you can have only in Split and in no other town in Croatia? What are the most exciting, still unresolved, mysteries about the construction of Diocletian's Palace?
·This tour starts on the eastern side of the Riva waterfront, next to the model of the old town of Split. Here is the chronological order of our stops: - The Brass Gate of Diocletian's Palace - The Substructure - The Triclinium (Diocletian's dining area) - The Vestibule (entrance hall of Diocletian's residency) - The Peristyle square (central square of Diocletian's Palace) - Emperor's Mausoleum (i. e. the cathedral of St. Domnius) - Jupiter's Temple (i. e. the baptistry of St. John) - Iron & Silver Gate - Golden Gate & Gregory of Nin - Piazza Square - Fruit square - Marmont's Street - The Square of Republic (i. e. Prokurative) This itinerary can be customised upon request so that you extend its duration by adding extra sights like the synagogue, St. Martin chapel, the bell-tower, Ethnographical museum, City museum, green market or Marjan hill viewpoint.
