Discover Dubrovnik's 20th Century History: A Walking Tour Through War and Resilience Join me on a unique walking tour through Dubrovnik's Old City, where you'll explore the city’s complex 20th-century history, focusing on the devastating war from 1991-1995. Being a tour guide with a Master’s degree in History, born in Dubrovnik during the war, I’ll guide you through key events, offering historical context and personal stories of the people who lived through the siege. Through maps, photos, and first hand accounts, you’ll learn about the breakup of Yugoslavia, the brutal shelling of Dubrovnik, the daily struggles of citizens during wartime, and their resilience. This tour provides a deep, human connection to Dubrovnik’s past, offering a rare glimpse into its darkest days and the enduring spirit of its people. Join me to better understand the modern history of Dubrovnik and Croatia!
- We’ll begin at the Saint Blaise Church, the heart of Dubrovnik’s Old City. - Next, we’ll stroll down Stradun, the city’s main street, before heading to the Franciscan Monastery, Saint Saviour Church, and Onofrio's Fountain, where we’ll examine war damage firsthand. - Our next stop is a local artist’s house, burned during the war, now a poignant reminder of horrors of the war. - In front of the Orthodox Church, we’ll discuss the role of religion in the conflict. - At Gundulić Square, we’ll explore the daily life of locals during the siege. - At Dubrovnik's port, you’ll see the hills that were used as artillery positions during the shelling. - We’ll conclude with a story of a local photographer who became a symbol of resilience, and visit the memorial room for fallen Dubrovnik defenders. Join me on this unforgettable journey through Croatia’s most complex century.
