Explore Tortuguero Canals with a guide who's family founded Tortuguero Village in early 1900 's. Enjoy a boat or canoe ride inside the National Park, learning about one of the most diverse protected areas in Costa Rica, searching for wildlife and listening to local stories. Walking in the village is part of the experience, meeting people and learning how it was like to live in such a remote area, the changes that the locals had experience and how tourism came to stay and change their lives forever. A hike at Tortuguero Hill, an extinct volcano is an activity I like to offer also, it's definitely a workout; over 500 steps uphill to get to a platform with the best view of the Caribbean Sea and the river Canals. During the green turtle season (June-October), a turtle tour is possible to do, it happens at night time, having the possibility of spotting any of the four species that nest in the area during that period of time only.
This tour is designed for travelers that are staying in San Jose and want to visit Tortuguero for 1or 2 nights. Day 1: - From San Jose the day starts with a 4 hours drive till we get to the place where we'll take the boat. The boat ride is about 2 hours long. - Once in Tortuguero, check-in at the hotel you choose or previously booked; ( I can recommend places but you make your reservation). That afternoon a walking tour in Tortuguero Village will take place, learning about the history, economy and culture. Day 2: - We will explore Tortuguero National Park by boat or canoe, that will depend on your physical condition and budget (paddling is required with canoes and it's cheaper than the engine boats). * This tour is better first time in the morning to increase the probability of spotting wildlife. - That afternoon you have the option of hiking Tortuguero Hill for an additional cost. - Transfer out will be the following morning.
