Escazú is known in Costa Rica as the City of the Witches. The legends and myths say that back in colonial times, it was easy to find a lot of healers who used natural remedies with those local villagers seeking to feel better. Some older members of the community might tell you the story of Zarate, the witch that protects nature and wanders around the mountains. The Cerros of Escazú Mountains are a protected zone that keeps the watersheds safe. For most of the people who live in the nearby areas, this is the source of water. They surround the Great Metropolitan Area and offer a lot of activities for hikers and visitors who love nature. It is possible to find a lot of types of hikes from beginner-level to advanced level. Also, the picturesque little town of San Antonio is where most of the traditions were born since the Colony. The locals are proud to carry the heritage to the next generations and today you will have the opportunity to meet some of them along this tour! Customizable itinerary:
-After your pick-up, we'll begin by taking a short drive to Los Cerros de Escazú, a protected area that surrounds the Central Valley. -On arrival at our starting point, we'll enjoy a medium-level hike with some steep gradients. -We'll proceed to walk on a gravel road with, some muddy parts depending on the weather conditions, always immersed in the beauty of the mountains, with great opportunities of viewpoints of the Central Valley. -Next, we'll drive into the town of San Antonio to visit the Mascarada Workshop. Here you'll learn of the making process, traditional uses and even enjoy a musical performance. -Later on, we'll visit the traditional Sugarmill of Don Torino who's been in charge of the artisanal sugar cane activity in the area. As you learn all about it, we'll be able to try the fresh sugarcane juice as well as the candy at the end! -Last but not least, we'll have the opportunity to enjoy a typical lunch in a local Restaurant in San Antonio. -We'll finish driving back to the pick-up point.
