Gabriel García Márquez started his career as a writer here at Cartagena, working as a journalist at the daily newspaper El Universal. He had arrived from Bogotá in 1948 with only 20 years of age, in a difficult moment for Colombia and in need of making a living. In this private tour, totally customizable to your needs and interests, the travelers will see some of the places, buildings, streets and culture that is permeated all over his literature. Come on an adventure that will make you walk where Gabo, as he is known, walked. Feel the ambiance around, taste the flavors, sense the Cartagena he loved and come to know where he got inspired to write novels like "Love in the times of cholera" or tales like "Of love and other demons", learn about his first published articles and understand in a jam session why Gabo links his masterwork to the rhythms of the Cumbia and the Vallenato. He said that "journalism is the best job in the world", and I add that tour guiding should go there too. Let Gabo guide us.
We will start at the Baluarte de San Francisco Javier, from there the tourists will see the Convento de Santa Teresa, where Gabo slept for the first night in Cartagena at a jail as a "guest". In those days the building was the secret police headquarters in very turbulent times for Colombia, from here we will know about the context of the moment and go to the Festival Internacional de Cine under the bastion and will understand the link of the movies in his masterwork. Then we will pass by the house where the newspaper El Universal operated and that is now the central office for the Fundación Gabo. Here you will get to know about the works of the late writer to ensure independence and give capacitation to journalists all around the world. We will then get immersed in that Cartagena that has a Gabo written all over it, in places and culture he made universal thru his literature. A stop for patacón and queso (green plantain and cheese) and a master jam session of Cumbia music. The tour is totally customizable.
