The Hanging Monastery was built in 491 A. D. , is unique as it includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements. The extant monastery was rebuilt and maintained in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Hanging Monastery is hung upon the cliff. Its structure follows the contour of the cliff, but the space is not confined. The dormitories are spacious , and the niches commodious , lit by windows and provided with warm beds. Although only a yard in girth , still elegance pervades in the construction. Yungang Grottoes was included by the UNESCO into the World Heritage List in 2001. Yungang Grottoes marks a vivid moment in the exchange of Buddhism stone carving styles and motifs in the 5th century from south and central Asia along the Silk Road to China. Here you will learn the ancient history , Buddhism and architecture of China.
-Pick up at the hotel at 9am If you will take the train that arrives in Datong on the same day, the train that arrives before 10:30am is fine, but we recommend that you book the train that arrives early, so that you can have time to visit as much as possible.
