Visiting Valparaíso is a great experience! It's not only Chile's main port, but in the 19th century it was the most important one in South America! Sailors actually called it "the jewel of the pacific".

At just about one hour and thirty minutes drive from Port of Valparaiso we hit the main road (68) which connects Capital city of Chile. Santiago is a very cosmopolitan city with outstanding contrasts of Neoclassical architecture, Bauhaus style and modern designs.

Valparaiso is perched among the hills which describe, though people and architecture, the past of the one of the most magnificent harbors in the Heritage site by UNESCO, which resulted in a boom for tourism and culture and the Cultural Capital of Chile, has been an important part of the country's history. It's a large bay with 45 hills around it that have naturally formed a spectacular amphitheater, the sea is the stage and each houses a seat with a panoramic view of the harbor.

Its hills are characterized by their view points, promenades, steep stair and Narrow Street that if they had been formally designed they would not have the magic they have. As if this was not enough, the hills have funiculars, called elevator, that connect ordinary people, from the heights where they live, to the plan where business activity operates in the city. These funiculars were built since year 1883, today they are National Monuments, a many of them are still operating.

Valparaiso is one of the oldest cities in Chile, the only one without a foundation date and for many years, the main port of Chile and South America. 

Nestled among its 42 colourful hills is a bright past, key in Chile's development, a port culture with bohemia and vanguard. Modern technology, including telephone, elevators, trolley buses, and cinema, arrived in this city over time. This first newspaper in South America was also founded here. With the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, Valparaiso began a slow decline in prominence but its rich legacy was key to being declared Patrimony for UNESCO in 2003.

We will walk the streets of Valparaiso and learn about its history.  We will admire the murals of local artists mixed with 19th and 20th-century architecture. We will ride a 100-year-old elevator to visit Sotomayor Square and a “colectivo” up Merced Hill to the home of Coto and Fabiana, who will prepare lunch for us and share some histories of their lives in the port.
