Full Day Ubatuba trip to Ilha Anchieta

"Ilha Anchieta is to Ubatuba what the Sugar Loaf Mountain cable-car is to Rio de Janeiro" Even before I knew about its historical importance, Ilha Anchieta fascinated me with its stunning beauty and magical energy. The first owner of the island was cacique Cunhambebe, the most powerful of the leaders of the native people of the coast, the Tupinamba tribe. Over the time, the island had other occupants and different uses, In 1942, the island became a maximum security prison. In 1952, there took place what became known as the largest prisoner rebellion in the world. In 1977, the island was declared to be a State Park. Nowadays, the impressive ruins of the prison share the attention of tourists with a museum, trails, one of them accessible and seven beautiful beaches. The journey to the island takes about 50 minutes by schooner. As you approach the island, the bluer the sea, and you can see Ilha Anchieta completely covered in the lush vegetation, surrounded by rocks on which the waves break and lovely beaches.
