On this tour, you will get a different view of Salvador by visiting its Lower City and the peninsula of Itapagipe. It's completely surrounded by the calm waters of the bay, an oasis of peace at only 8 km from the busy harbor area and my favorite part of the city where I lived for more than 20 years. I recommend a visit to the biggest and swarming open market of the city, called São Joaquim to dive into the daily life and habits of the locals and discover some secrets of the Candomblé, the African religion. We visit neighborhoods like Ribeira, with fantastic views on the Bay of All Saints and its small marinas and the possibility to taste the best ice cream of the city! Then the famous church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, a unique place for pilgrimage where you can still feel the syncretism between Catholicism and Candomblé. Finally Boa Viagem with the Fort of Monte Serrat and the Ponta de Humaitá, the most romantic spot in Salvador with the possibility to see one of the most wonderful sunsets of Brazil!
We pick you up at your hotel if in the center of Salvador. The itinerary depends on where your hotel is localized in the city and on the traffic conditions. • We first drive through the busy area of the port of Salvador. • We visit the lively market of São Joaquim • Then we drive through some low-class neighborhoods, like Uruguay that once formed the biggest slump of Brazil. • This takes us to the Itapagipe peninsula where we visit the neighborhoods of Ribeira, Bonfim and Boa Viagem. Alternative itineraries, depending on your interests, can include: • The Dique do Tororó to have a look on the beautiful statues of the Orixás, African gods and goddesses, and the splendid sport stadium Arena Fonte Nova or • The neighborhood of Liberdade, one of the biggest "black" neighborhoods of Salvador, situated in the Upper City with fantastic panoramic views on the Lower City and the Bay. • Finally, we drive you back to your hotel or drop you off at an intermediate place if you prefer.
