Nestled along Belize River Valley's lush banks (Bermudian Landing), the Community Baboon Sanctuary (CBS) is a pioneering conservation project dedicated to preserving Yucatán black howler monkey's habitat, locally known as the "baboon". Beyond its ecological significance, it's a cultural treasure intertwined with Belize's Creole heritage. It spans over 5,000 has, encompassing 7 villages, where Creole traditions thrive through storytelling, cuisine & music. Established in 1985 by Dr. Robert Horwich & supported by local landowners, CBS was founded on a revolutionary concept: community-driven conservation. Through voluntary pledges, landowners agreed to protect forested areas, ensuring the monkeys's survival while promoting sustainable land use & ecotourism. On this tour you'll not only experience the howler monkeys' mesmerizing calls but also Belize River Valley's history & culture, plus learn about reforestation projects, medicinal plants, sustainable land practices & farming wildlife protection initiatives.
•After picking you up from the port, we'll head to the CBS Visitor Centre where I'll provide you an orientation about the sanctuary’s history, its conservation efforts and the Creole cultural significance. We'll also see Belize's first Natural History Museum. •I'll then proceed to introduce you to members of the Women's Conservation Group who manage the sanctuary’s education and tourism programs. •Next, you'll participate in a tree-planting activity, contributing to habitat restoration efforts! •What follows will be a guided nature walk where we'll trek through protected forest trails. Keep your eyes out for we'll likely encounter black howler monkeys in their natural habitat so we could observe their social behaviours and vocalizations! •At last, I'll drop you off back at the port.
