In May 1940 the British expeditionary force had to retreat under the pressure of three panzer corps under Rundstedt. The German spearhead reached the coast and swung along the coast. Large numbers of troops were cut off and surrounded by German troops. The situation grew so desperate that two British battalion commanders manned a Bren gun, with one colonel firing and the other loading. The evacuation from the beaches of Dunkirk is known as the Miracle of Dunkirk or Operation Dynamo. My tour takes you for a walk in the town, the port, and on the longest beach in Europe where a memorial testifies to the successful evacuation of 330, 000 troops. The Nazi submarines base was dismantled for the construction of a modern seaport. Part of the old Vauban fortification, however, has remained and is now the house of a unique museum dedicated to this military operation. After this visit we will take the afternoon for a visit of the spectacular underground Nazi V-2 missile silo and launching platform.
- This tour starts in Ypres. - I will drive us to Dunkirk for a leisurely walk on the beach and the sea wall before we visit the interesting 'Operation Dynamo Museum', situated inside the old city ramparts. - The 'Crested Eagle' shipwreck is still visible, but only at low tide. We have a window of 1 hour. It takes preliminary checking of tour time with the tides. Reckon a 2 mi walk from the parking. - To visit the impressive Nazi V-2 missile launching platform in the afternoon, we will drive half an hour inland. - This tour can also be personalized should you wish to visit the grave of a relative or a particular national monument. This tour can also be booked in combination with a one-day Ypres Salient tour. If it serves your travel plan, I can customize this tour and drop you off in Bruges or at the Lille Europe station. From there the high-speed Eurostar train travels via the Channel Tunnel, and takes you to London in only 90', to Paris or Brussels in 60'.
