Ghent has over 400 protected monuments, more than 50 churches and even several UNESCO world heritage sites. Lonely Planet has described it as Europe's hidden gem. This vibrant and picturesque city is a must-see when you come to Belgium! In the last few decades, Ghent has also become a frontrunner in the country as a green, ecological and bicycle-friendly city, with a huge car-free zone. So biking is really the nicest way to move through this lovely picturesque town! Also biking allows us to go to some of the less visited historical sites that are a bit farther away from the city centre, for example our beautiful beguinages, listed as UNESCO world heritage sites. We can pick up rental bikes next to the Saint-Peter's station, the Dampoort station, or the public library (De krook). While Ghent has good cycling infrastructure, our historical city also has some authentic cobblestone streets and a lot of tram tracks, so you should have some experience riding a bike in urban areas. Let's go!
- We'll start our tour at the Gent-Sint-Pieters train station, where we pick up the bike. - Afterwards, we'll cycle along the river Lys towards the Medieval City Center. On our route the magnificent Old Justice Palace and several surprising pieces of art! - When we arrive in the Old Town, we walk along the quays of the Old Port, and we go see the Castle of the Counts. - Afterwards, we'll tackle the cobblestone roads of the Prinsenhof. An off-the-beaten-path neighborhood where I'll share the story of the most powerful, most important & most hated Ghentian ever born: the emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire. - Next we discover some newer parts of our city center: the Old Docks, the Wintercircus and the new library. You'll discover there's more to Ghent than just the middle ages! - At last, we cycle back towards the station and pass by the Saint-Peter's Abbey and the Book Tower, an architectural gem that defines the city skyline.

We'll do this tour by bicycle. This is not a sporty tour; we will not drive fast, nor very long distances. We simply use the bike to move around the city. It is possible to rent electric bikes. We'll rent urban bikes at either the city library (De Krook) or at one of the two train stations of our city. Warning: Ghent is a medieval city full of cobblestone roads and also tram tracks. You can only do this tour if you have cycling experience and don't fear driving a bike in an urban environment.
Gent, Vlaams Gewest, 9000 Belgium
