After working 15 years for a multinational cy. I decided that it was time for a career change!...
Itinerary not perfect? Message Carl O. to build a tour that’s just right for you.
The purpose of this tour is to give you a sense of the historical situation in Europe before, during and after the 1st WW. After a visit to the Flanders Fields American Military Cemetery ( optional) I take you along the old front line, an arc-shaped course, called the Salient. The topography, the relics, the monuments, the memorials and cemeteries tell us the story of so many lives lost for so little gains. More than telling you what you can find in any good history-book, I'll give you the stories of the local people, the troops fighting in the front line trenches, the officers facing situations they were not trained for, the medics who had to cure wounds they had never seen before, how one learned to survive a panoply of modern (chemical) weapons. . . Empires were dismantled. New borders were drawn. The course of European history changed, but the history of the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, China and many other countries also took a new direction. The world became a different place.
We meet you at the Brussels Central station before we drive west. Among other points of interest we visit : -Flanders Fields American Military Cemetery is where you gain an understanding of the American dimension in the war -Essex Farm British Cemetery and Aid Station, where the physician John McCrae served in 1915 -Langemark German military cemetery -Vancouver Corner, Canadian Memorial -Tyne Cot Commonwealth Military Cemetery and Memorial -The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing We return to base after visiting the Menin Gate Memorial. You could stay late to attend the 20:00 h Last Post service. See also https://lastpost. be/. Reckon that you will not return to your hotel before 22:15 h if you choose to stay late, but you don't pay extra for it. If it suits your travel plan, I can drop you off (after the tour) in Bruges, Arras, or the Lille Europe station where you can catch a fast train to London ( 90') or Paris (60').

The heart of Brussels is pedestrian. I can't drive my car (minivan) to the doorstep of your hotel in downtown Brussels. This tour doesn't run on working days because of the heavy traffic to get into the city's heart in the morning and evening. In the evening rush hour, the traffic most often is at a standstill.
