At the end of the 19th century some Viennese artists formed a progressive movement that rejected academic doctrines and conservative views on painting. These artists created under the motto "To each time its art, and to art its freedom". Klimt, Schiele, Kokoschka are the biggest names in Viennese Expressionism and Art Nouveau - these artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries refused to create the merely "beautiful" and set out to find a new meaning for art. On my tour you will see the canvases of these and many other outstanding masters of the period, and learn what the Secession is, how the Viennese artists arrived at the views they embodied in their works, and why these images remain so compelling today.
I will introduce you to the works of Viennese artists in the collections of the Leopold Museum so that you can answer the question of why and on what basis their art was created, and why their works are able to move us today. The tour starts with Klimt's early portraits and then traces the development of his work through to his 'golden' period. You'll see his striking painting, Life and Death, and understand the sacrifices the artist made to keep up with the times. We will look at Egon Schiele's self-portraits and consider how his approach to painting can be explained in terms of psychoanalysis. Through the paintings of prominent artists, you will capture images and concepts that were in the air at the time of the breakdown of the epoch and gain a better understanding of the period. *This itinerary can be customized.
