This tour will focus on the historic city center containing the majority of Vienna's attractions. Streetcars will supplement our walk (using public transportation like the Viennese do) to give our legs a few moments rest as we admire the imposing architecture on the Ringstrasse - a majestic boulevard that showcases Vienna's grandest historic revival buildings leaving a lasting impression. Alan loves history and will present these venues with period context and suggestions for visiting on your own after the tour. He will assist in purchasing the optimum public transportation pass for the time you are in Vienna, allowing you to also make use of Vienna's public transportation, i. e. streetcars, subways and buses, after the conclusion of the tour.
Highlights on the Ringstrasse include: The Staatsoper (State Opera) Historic Hotels Mozart Monument Kunsthistorisches Museuem - Art History Museum Maria Theresia Denkmal - Maria Theresia Monument Heldenplatz - Heroes Square Hofburg mit der Spanischehofreitschule - Imperial Palace with the Spanish Riding School Volksgarten - People's Park Rathaus - City Hall Burgtheater - Imperial Theater University Votiv Church A pause at Schottentor - a major streetcar transit and subway intersection will provide your guide the opportunity for explaining how to reach the edge of the Vienna Woods by streetcar, providing opportunities to visit the Heuriger - the traditional Wine Taverns providing refreshing Viennese wines and buffets. City center sights include the Graben and Kaertnerstrasse streets with their eclectic boutiques, cafés and restaurants. The highlight in the center of Vienna is Stehphansdom, an imposing cathederal whose origins date back to 1137. (The current structure is a few hundred years younger. )
