In my ‘Contemporary Vienna’ tour, we focus on how people live in the present times. We zoom in on a central, charming, and lively Viennese ‘Grätzl’- this is how we call our neighborhoods – to explore this mesmerizing and vibrant city off the beaten tracks and beyond its iconic sights. The focus of this tour is on local projects which are doing business in a sustainable and socially responsible way or associations active in community work, and how these are embedded in the city. We are exploring local contemporary culture through the lens of the local enterprises and its people in one popular neighborhood, the ‘Schleifmühlviertel’ in Vienna’s 4th district called Wieden. This tour will offer insights into why Vienna is considered the most livable city in the world, and shade light on very specific stories: citizens of Vienna, their ideas and aspirations, and their engagement in community-based, sustainable ways of economical interaction and daily life.
During the tour, we’ll visit three homegrown businesses or associations who each take a participatory approach on sustainable economy and societal welfare. - We’ll learn about social design in the outlet of a manufacturing workshop in which individuals who face difficulties in finding employment transform used or discarded products into design objects for companies and individuals alike. - We’ll take a break in a unique multi-generational salon, where Viennese grandmothers bake their best cakes, and the youngsters serve the nicest Viennese coffee in the hood. - With caffeine, sugar, and love in our veins, we’ll continue to discover a cooperative which is committed to offer help and perspectives to more vulnerable members of our society through several support programs while also being active in education. The tour covers approx. one mile of mostly flat terrain, some cobbles and stairs. It ends after approx. 2,5 hours on Karlsplatz between Karlskirche and Wien Museum.

We'll walk approx. 1 mile, mostly flat terrain, some stairs and cobblestones. If another meeting spot is agreed, we would take public transportation to the starting point of the tour.
Kettenbrückengasse, Wien, Wien, Austria
We'll meet in front of the U-Bahn station (subway station) Kettenbrückengasse, described by the white art nouveau pavillon by Otto Wagner. Upon request, a different meeting point might be arranged, in which case we would travel here together by public transportation to start the tour.
