This trip is a wonderfull combination of culture, history and amazing landscapes. We'll travel from rainforest to dessert areas, in a unique landscape. The beauty of the colourful mountains and the space of the high plateau are breathtaking. Our highlights will be: the Seven colours mountain in Purmamarca, the Cuesta de Lipan, a twisty road that climbs 2000 m (6500 ft) in 20 km (12 miles), Salinas Grandes salt flat and Toro's gorge, with the railways of Train to the Clouds. I was a guide there, and can tell you that the history of its construction is really interesting. Most of the tours goes in the opposite direction, I prefer this way. I think it is better to catch the best light in Purmamarca, and avoid as much as possible other tourists. It's a long day, driving more than 500 kms (310 miles), and road are not always easy. If you have the possiblity to split in 2 days, overnatting along the way, it will become less intense and more enyojable. This option is valid for those who are short in time.
We head from Salta to Purmamarca, in Quebrada de Humahuaca, driving along the rainforest. Once in Purmamarca we stop to visit the characteristic town, the colourfull handicrafts market and we walk in Paseo de los Colorados, around the Seven coulours mountain. Then, we drive uphill the twisty «Cuesta de Lipan» towards the highest point 4200m, where we make a short photo stop at the sign that shows the altutide. We drive downhill to Salinas Grandes, where we stop, walk and learn about the salt lake formation and the economical activities there. We cross the high plateau to San Antonio de los Cobres, the biggest town in this inhospitable region called Puna, and from there continue towards to Salta following Quebrada del Toro and the railways of the Train to the Clouds. We will travel from 1200m (4000 ft) to 4200m (13800 ft), so the weather can change a lot. Always wear a light layer and bring something warm. Comfortable shoes and suncream are a must. The tour can always be customized according to your interest
