Vienna is a city full of delights and history. As a licensed tour guide for 7 years I present Vienna's majestic sights within the context of its glorious past and highlighting aspects of interest to native English speakers, whether from North America, the British Isles or Down Under. I was born and educated in the US and first came to Vienna 40 years ago on a study abroad program in college. Then after completing an advanced degree in the US, I returned for additional adventure. My formal education is in economics and international business, but my passion is history and how it is displayed in Vienna's landmark buildings and monuments. Architectural styles evident in Vienna range from the Gothic, particularly St. Stephan's Cathedral - the symbol of Vienna at the center of the city - to the Baroque exemplified in the Schönbrunn summer palace, to elaborate historic revival structures built on the Ringstrasse during the era of Emperor Franz Joseph in the late 1800s, to the Art-Nouveaux at the turn of the last century, right up to contemporary modern. Though other cities may be larger, there is no city that offers so many impressive sights; palaces, churches, parks, monuments and museums within in its compact historic city center, and then provides inexpensive, efficient and clean public transit to conveniently visit attractions beyond the city center. Vienna is also the city of music. Mozart, Hayden, Beethoven, Schubert, the Strauss dynasty, (Johann Sr. , and his son Johann Jr. - composer of the Blue Danube Walz, and the younger brothers Josef & Eduard), along with their contemporaries Wagner, Suppé, Brahms, Mahler among many others all made their livelihoods here. The performances at the State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra continue to contribute to Vienna's legacy of music. Gustav Klimt and his art nouveaux colleagues were prominent in Vienna's fin-de-siècle era of decorative arts and design - known in Austria as "Jugendstil". Then there are the delicacies of Viennese cafés with elaborate coffee selections to accompany strudels, torts and pastries. The delights are endless…… Let me to introduce you to elegant, historic and beautiful Vienna!
