I am a Washingtonian, born and bred, and I mean that literally. I am a descendant of the enslaved at Mount Vernon. Tracing my roots back eight generations to Mount Vernon. As a young boy walking on Capitol Hill, I remember the Tour Guides guiding the out-of-towners about the city. Most were then ladies with white gloves and umbrellas. I didn't think much of the white gloves, but that's a bygone era and what women of culture wore. I remember thinking, what a fantastic job to have, showing folks about the monuments, the Memorials, and the Halls of Congress. After 30 years of working as a government attorney dealing with labor law, retirement allowed me to seriously pursue tour guiding.

I earned an undergraduate degree in English Literature and Education from Fisk University (Nashville, Tennessee) and a law degree from Howard University. White House, Capitol and Supreme Court Private Tour

Concourse C (C3, C2, and C1). These galleries spotlight the journey of 3. 5 million West Africans who endured the brutal disregard of their humanity and the journey of their descendants. It begins with an elevator ride that functions as a well-curated illusion of time travel. From the bright, open space of the 21st century, visitors descend three levels below ground to the darkness and confinement of the 1400s.

Level 3 - In the "Making a Way Out of No Way" exhibits, you'll see how African Americans have resisted and persisted, thanks to mutual support and through education, religion, entrepreneurship, and activism. In the Power of Place, this
theme often delves into the significance of locations and spaces in African American history and culture.
Exhibits may highlight the importance of specific places, such as neighborhoods, churches, schools, and cultural institutions, in shaping the African American experience.

L4 - Culture exhibits explore themes of modern art theater, dance, music, and sports.

National Museum of African American History and Culture

Walking the grounds, you can imagine its historical evolution. Since 1789 when Pierre L'Enfant laid out a plan for the new federal city, the National Mall has been an integral part of his grand design. The two-mile tree-lined green space connecting the U. S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial has transformed from L'Enfant's original vision.
In the early days, it was no more than an English garden bordering the capitol grounds expanding to the Washington Monument. The first monument's construction was stalled by the Civil War. The mall would be pivotal in the defense of the Capitol, the White House. There the Union Army established headquarters with Union troops were present on the Mall from 1860 to 1865. In 1902, Michigan Senator McMillian the vision it has become today. The Plan made several recommendations for improving the design and appearance of the grounds, and expanding into the swampy marshland, and subverting Tiber Creek underground.
