Guide #56814
I'm Jaime, a New Orleans Culturalist and experienced guide. "If I can't talk about it, it's probably not important!" I'm a generations-deep native New Orleanian and Lousisianian with a passion for (and deep sense of connection to) the unique, influential history and culture of South Louisiana. My genealogy is literally the story of Louisiana. My mother's family is deeply rooted in the rural, French-speaking Louisiana communities that settled along the upper Bayou Lafourche near the Mississippi River over 200 years ago, only relocating to "the City" in the 1930s. My paternal roots arose from the under-told but no less significant story of European immigration into 19th-century New Orleans that propelled this French-speaking colonial capital into one of the largest and most important American cities of the era. Having deep roots doesn't make me, or anyone else, an expert. I'm interested in ALL of it, and that's what makes me the right choice to help you experience New Orleans. It's the depth of my knowledge of its fascinating history, served up with my love, passion and understanding of all what makes this place special. I want to help you understand how this low-lying, sweltering place on the edge of the continent became one of the most interesting and fascinating places in the world. Growing up I thought New Orleans to be just like any American city, I was ready to be somewhere else, so I eagerly went away for college. Soon enough though, frequently hearing comments like "Wow, you're from New Orleans? How cool!" led me to the discovery that this IS a special place, and for MANY reasons, sparking a lifelong interest in all things New Orleans, especially the music. During a decades-long exile across several states—college, marriage, family, career—this interest grew into a passion for learning all I could about the New Orleans story. I read different content, books, listened to music and, when in NOLA, immersed myself in live music and now understand "home" to be a most interesting, compelling and FUN place. Then there's the music! We have an old epithet, "The City that Care Forgot", which though less frequently used today, still rings familiar, because a city so famous for fun, frivolity and birthing so much great music must be such a place. New Orleans' world class live music scene is lively, alive and way more than just Jazz. On any night (and I'm not kidding), you can hear Blues, Funk, Rock, Jazz, Brass Band, Indian Music, Cajun and Zydeco and more, and most is not on Bourbon Street. If it swings, we got it! City of New Orleans Tour Guide License #15LTG-10203, since 2015; hundreds of tours led. Master of Community Planning (emphasis on Historic Preservation), Auburn University. I am not licensed to drive tour groups at this time. I can accompany you in your vehicle, if you wish.
