Hello, my name is Kurt and I am a certified Tour Director who loves to travel and understands what people expect when visiting a city for the first or fifth time. I graduated from the International Guide Academy in Denver Colorado and have traveled to many amazing places but nothing beats my hometown of Nashville.

I grew up in Buffalo New York and moved to Tennessee 23 years ago, to run a chicken restaurant in Jackson Tn. Jackson is halfway between Nashville and Memphis so I got the best of both worlds, both cities have great food and music. Ten years ago, Nashville started to change and I fell in love with what was going on and all the changes that were happening, so we packed our bags and moved to Music City.

Most people come to Nashville to start a music career, I came to start my new career as a tour guide. I started by doing walking tours downtown for the CVB and backstage tours at the Grand Ole Opry. Five years ago I started working for a tour company in Nashville doing mid to large-size group tours that covered the whole city. There are so many things to see and do and talk about, I do not have the space to share it all here, but have you wondered why we are called, Music City? What is the story about Nashville's hot chicken and why is our hockey team named after a prehistoric animal? These are just a few things we can talk about.

Now, through ToursByLocals, I want to focus on smaller groups of 2-6 people where you are not a number but where you are a guest. With my love for history and staying on top of current happenings, my goal is to tell you all we have to offer from the past to the present day. Not only can we talk music history but I am happy to help you find that great place that is a hidden gem.

Welcome to Nashville and Germantown, our first official suburb. This area is loaded with as rich a present-day, as its history, boasting of so much to see and do. This neighborhood has gone through many transitions and is now a trendy restaurant and craft cocktail area.

Most locals go to Germantown to experience the Farmers' Market and BiCentenial Park, which is a beautiful historical park established in 1996. They also enjoy The Tennessee State History museum, which was added in 2018, followed by the addition of the Tennessee State Library and Archives building in 2021.

While we stroll together, I will tell you about some of the famous residents of this neighborhood, as well as the Civil War history that happened here. This neighborhood housed one of the largest camps for Union troops in Nashville as well as a field hospital.

So walk with me as we travel back in time, and then I will bring it full circle when we talk about Nashville's hosting 2021's largest New Year's Eve celebration in the country.

Germantown Walking Tour - Half Day

Here we will walk three different areas of the city, tieing in the history of the past with what is currently happening today. Nashville's ride has been a roller coaster experience, to say the least. I will join you on this ride as we explore the SoBro district, named because of its location south of Broadway. This area is home to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Walk of Fame park.

We will then venture over to what locals call Lower Broad, where Honky Tonks reign. Not only will you learn why they are called Honky Tonks but we will get to experience a couple of the most famous ones on the strip. The music will draw us in and what these walls have seen and heard, well I will tell you.

Then just steps away is the waterfront and second avenue a different vibe altogether. This area is home to Fort Nashboro where we will talk about the settling of the city and how we got our name.

After a visit to Printers Alley, we will end at the Ryman Auditorium the most famous building downtown.
