Hollywood may have made William Wallace a household name, but in Stirling they've been honoring the Scottish freedom fighter for hundreds of years. There's more to this city than just Braveheart mementos, so take a private Stirling tour for an authentic local experience. Stirling's strategic position along the River Forth between the lowlands and highlands has meant it's been coveted - and fought over - since Roman times, so ask your guide to explain the area's turbulent history before you set out. Start at the Church of the Holy Rude, where the infant son of Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned, before heading to Mar's Wark, noting the intricate carvings in the façade. Spend time behind bars at the old jail, then hit the nearest bar and celebrate your freedom with a double whisky. A visit to the castle is a must, but ask your guide to schedule a stop outside of peak visiting hours. If you can, climb the 246 spiral stairs to the top of the Wallace Monument - your camera will thank you.
