Guide #50182

Although born in Yorkshire, I have lived near Plymouth, across the Tamar in Cornwall, for the majority of my life, with a couple of interludes in Africa and Wales. I have been a Blue Badge Tourist Guide in England's South West for many years but have had 'other lives' including being a mining and engineering geologist working in prospecting, gold mining and road and tunnel construction , a countryside ranger managing a 400 acre country park and a teacher of design technology. I love meeting people, sharing stories and facts about my local area. . . . whether it is enabling discovery of the fascinating industrial heritage that is the World Heritage of Cornish Mining - visiting the evocative Poldark and Doc Martin Country, or telling stories of Giants or ancient Kings, it is always fun to encourage people to explore the landscape of the West Country, in the South West of England. Although the same country, the Far South West is a very different land from the industrial north or the bustle that is London. Easy to get to by train, road or air I can advise on best routes and venues. I have many interests and hobbies and am always reading and learning new things. Currently, as part of the delayed Mayflower 400 commemoration, I am a volunteer and have been stewarding at Illuminate, the festival of light at Thanksgiving in Plymouth UK, watching the naming of the Mayflower Autonomous Ship on the 400th anniversary of the sailing of Mayflower 1, and interpreting the unusual art installation SPEEDWELL in Plymouth Sound. I have also been seen dressed as a Pilgrim. . . As a major seaport on the Western Approaches, Plymouth has seen the departure of many famous voyages. Sir Francis Drake, James Cook and Charles Darwin to name the 3 most famous. Close by is the wild and bleak moorland of the Dartmoor National Park with its layers of history, archaeology and natural habitats For a different day out, the North Cornish coast, facing the dramatic Atlantic, is the home to legends of King Arthur at Tintagel and the more modern depiction of television characters such as Doc Martin at Boscastle and the retelling of Winston Graham's books about Ross Poldark. From Plymouth we can head out to the mysterious and beautiful Dartmoor National Park. , villages. . 365 square miles of granite upland with remains of mans influence, standing stone circles, burial mounds, lost and ancient villages and lots of stories. I love telling the stories of the Hairy Hands, the Tinner's Rabbit and the Great Grimpen Mire. From Exeter or Taunton the option of exploring Exmoor another of our National Parks is a possibility for a day visit or an overnight. The train journey from London Paddington to Taunton (90 minutes) or Exeter (2 hours) on Brunel's famous Great Western Railway line means that you can be picked up from either train station, or your accommodation if you are overnighting, and taken to the uplands of West Somerset and North Devon. As well as amazing coastal views, there are hidden villages and little churches, one of which featured in a scene from R D Blackmore's Lorna Doone. Try a classic cream tea, visit a wonderful castle or ride on a steam train, all things to choose to add to your tour I AM REGISTERED AS MEETING THE UK GOVERNMENT & TOURISM INDUSTRY COVID-19 STANDARDS.
