Welcome to Orkney, I look forward to showing you around our stunning Island. My name is Garry and I have called Orkney my home for over 20 years. I moved to Orkney when I was 10 years old and my love for the Islands developed quickly. I live in Kirkwall with my wife and 4 young children. Orkney has a bit of everything, history, beautiful bays, dramatic sea cliffs, stunning scenery, friendly locals, wildlife, locally produced food and drink and a wide range of festivals. You can visit our UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Heart of Neolithic Orkney which will take you 5000 years back in time. You can see our beautiful St Magnus Cathedral which is nearly 900 years old, in the heart of Kirkwall, or you can see the Italian Chapel, built during World War 2 by Italian prisoners of war. Orkney also has a large food and drink industry which includes 2 whisky distiliries, 3 gin distiliries, 2 beer producers and local bakeries and butchers. I have been involved in the tourism industry in Orkney for over 10 years now. I started off as a taxi driver where I would give taxi tours of the island. I then began working as a coach driver in the tourism industry where I gained a lot of knowledge about Orkney and a lot of experience. In 2017 I achieved my long term goal of becoming a qualified tourist guide and love my job. I have a keen interest in Orkney history, tradition and life, having experienced many of this personally and enjoy sharing these stories with my guests.
