Guide #70315

Hi, my name is Ross. I am a qualified City of London guide, former History teacher and travel book writer. I have lived in the London area for most of my life and I love telling the stories about its people and places, bringing the City to life and sharing the quirky facts I have learned about its past. The City has a unique character all of its own, there’s nowhere quite like it with so many hidden gems above your head and below your feet. It was founded 2000 years ago by the Romans and gradually expanded beyond the city walls to take up a space slightly larger than a square mile. It is by this nickname that the City is affectionately referred to today. Some of its stories are well known, but there is still plenty yet to discover. Like the men who saved the works of Shakespeare from being lost to history, the Lord Mayor of London who became a staple of family Christmas entertainment and why is the smallest statue in the City two mice fighting over some cheese? I must warn you though, that London has a dark side. It has been destroyed by multiple fires, witness to chilling crimes, and is the site of some of the most gruesome murders and executions in this countries history. We may come across the occasional ghost or even a victim of Jack the Ripper on our travels, so keep your wits about you at all times. Some of the places we visit may feel strangely familiar to you. The City has been the backdrop for many films including the Harry Potter franchise, Four Weddings & a Funeral, Avengers: Age of Ultron and James Bond. The quirkier side of London includes some of the wonderful ceremonies that have occurred within its boundaries. For example, the annual sheep drive across the River Thames, the Trial of the Pyx and The Lord Mayors Show. As a member of the Worshipful Company of Stationers & Newspaper Makers I can share with you the history of the City’s ceremonies and their many ancient Guilds. Find out not just about their past but get a glimpse into their present and possibly their future too. If you have a special request or wish to have a customised tour, please don’t hesitate to ask. I love history and I enjoy sharing my passion for this wonderful city with guests and locals alike. Whether you’ve been here before or its your first time, I look forward to welcoming you on one of my tours, there’s something for everyone. I do not have a licence to guide inside the Tower of London or St Paul’s Cathedral.
