Hi, my name is Wan Ling. I am a professional guide and I conduct nature and city tours on this sunny little island home called Singapore.

I started volunteering with the National Parks Board in 2009. I enjoyed conducting the guided walks for the public so much that I decided to get certified to become a professional guide.

To earn my licence as a professional guide, not only did I have to know my plants and animals well, I had to learn about the historical, cultural and development of Singapore too! It was a good thing because I now have more stories to tell.

I love to birdwatch, love to travel, love to take photographs, and I am very grateful to be able to share my passion for plants and animals with visitors and to show them how amazing our natural world is.

The Rail Corridor is a 24km long ecological corridor that connects major green spaces in Singapore. For this tour, we will walk from the Old Bukit Timah Railway Station to the Rail Mall. This section of the walk takes us closest to the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, one of the few remaining areas of primary rainforest that we have.

We will detour to either the Hindhede Quarry or Singapore Quarry, both located at the foot of Bukit Timah Hill, followed by brunch at the Rail Mall.

Pulau Ubin is an island located off north-eastern Singapore. Travelling to this island is like going back in time to Singapore in the 60s. Some of our last villages or 'kampongs' are found here.

One of the places you must visit is Chek Jawa, located off the eastern coast of Pulau Ubin. This place is so unique that you probably would not find another area in Singapore with such a rich biodiversity - coastal hill forest, mangroves, sandbar, seagrass lagoon, rocky shore, and coral rubble area. A walk on the Coastal Boardwalk is always full of surprises. I have seen wild boars or birds looking for food at the sandbar, or macaques catching crabs during very low tide. I have also seen hundreds of fishes swimming below the boardwalk as the tide is coming in.

What I love most about visiting Ubin is the moment the ferry leaves the terminal, one gets this calm feeling of leaving the busy city life behind. If you are someone who enjoys spending time in nature, I am sure you will enjoy this tour!

Half-day Chek Jawa - Pulau Ubin Nature Tour

Tucked away in the north-western part of the island, this ecological gem is a mangrove forest. Covering only 2. 2 square kilometres, this is Singapore's first ASEAN Heritage Park and it is also a member of the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership.

From September to March, migratory shorebirds, such as the Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, Pacific Golden Plover, etc, can be seen in the reserve. Some will stop here to feed and rest before they fly further south and some will stay on until March when it is time to fly north. Find out where these birds come from, where they go and how we keep track of them on their amazing journey.

I have been birdwatching here since 1995 and as a nature guide for more than 10 years. I would love to share my knowledge of mangroves with you and show you where to look for local residents such as mudskippers, crabs, spiders, birds, and monitor lizards. If you are very lucky, you may see some otters, and even a crocodile or two!
