Aloha! I'm Wendy S. I grew up in Los Angeles, but I have lived on Maui for over fifteen years and worked at Haleakala National Park for nine of those years, as a ranger and for the nonprofit park partner. I also spent three years teaching English in Japan, so I love communicating culture through stories and songs. I like helping visitors experience Maui nature, whether hiking on a volcano, birdwatching in a cloud forest, or wading in a clear stream. Ask me about the weather, geology, plants and animals--I'll be happy to share my mana'o (knowledge, insights). I am crazy about islands, even the one where I first played tour guide, the infamous Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay; or Santa Cruz Island off California where I first volunteered, for The Nature Conservancy as a vegetation surveyor; or Wizard Island in Crater Lake National Park, where I first worked as a National Park Service ranger. But as we say here, "Maui no ka 'oi!" (Maui is the best!) I specialize in day tours to Haleakala for hikers, sightseers, or birdwatchers, and am happy to customize tours to include other locations "in the neighborhood"--farm tours, a state park, a wildlife refuge, an outdoor cafe. . . let me know what you're looking for and I'll be happy to provide a suggested itinerary to match your Maui dream vacation tour day! *Certified Interpretive Guide, National Association for Interpretation, 2002. *Volunteer of the Year in Interpretation, Haleakala National Park, 2001. *Ranger, National Park Service, 2008, 2011-2013. *Interpreter, non-profit Park Partners (Hawaii Natural History Association, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Hawaii Pacific Parks Association) 2000 - 2003, 2004 - 2007, 2013 - 2017. *Hawaii State Certified Tour Guide/Driver, Temptation Tours, 2017- 2020. *Public Utilities Commission motor carrier permit *Haleakala National Park permit *First Aid/CPR/AED Certified, American Red Cross *National Geographic photo credit: "Haleakala National Park," pp. 332-3 in the National Geographic Guide to National Parks of the United States, Eighth Edition I currently do not drive the Road to Hana. I do have a National Park permit and insurance to take you on trails in the Haleakala Summit district, though!
