Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II ascended the Amber throne in 1699, but abandoned the rugged hills of the fort-city of Amber in 1727. He sought the adjoining plains for his perfect palace-city and laid the foundations of Jaipur, which owes its name to him.

Designed by the brilliant young Bengali architect Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya in accordance with Shilp Shastra - an ancient Hindu treatise on architecture - Jaipur follows a grid system. The wide straight bazaars (shopping centers), raastaas (streets), galis (lanes), mohallas (residential colonies) and uniform rows of shops on either side of main bazaars.
