Fast and convenient, relax between your flights
So you just arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport with 8 hours to spare until the departure of your outbound flight?
Ninety minutes later you can be visiting the major sights in Taipei by taking the Taoyuan Airport Express metro to and from the city Taipei Main train station. The purple color express train takes just 40 minutes, departing every 15 minutes. On board and in many places in town you can check your messages using free Wifi.
From the Taipei city transport hub we can venture out on the city metro lines.
Plan to see about one spot per available hour using the Taipei metro and bus lines, or a short taxi ride.
If you have not checked-through for your onward flight, you can do this on arrival. Or use the check-in facility at Taipei Main station for China Airlines (CI) and EVA Air (BR) three hours before departure. The minimum check-in time for TPE is 2 hours, or check with your airline on arrival.
So all together you may have 8 minus 1. 5 and 3 hours = 3. 5 hours or more to see the city.
Early morning is an interesting time to see street markets and temples. Opening at 09:00 we'll certainly see Taipei 101. A full visit to the 89th floor observation deck at 382 meters takes generally 90 minutes or more.
You can take pictures at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial and try to see the last full changing of the guard on the hour on the 4th floor of the hall by 16:00 hours. Similar 15 minute military drill ceremonies can also be seen at Sun Yat-sen Memorial and Martyrs' Shrine.
We can visit some of the many temples such as Lungshan or Baoan temple, museums like the National Palace, Fine Arts, or National Taiwan museum. Shops and street markets - anything you prefer, and travel as far and wide across town as we can.
Mind that Taipei 101 and National Palace Museum are usually very busy, taking at least 90-120 minutes each to visit.

Christine and Jan gave us a great taste of Taipei and Taiwanese culture on our brief layover in Taiwan. They were full of knowledge, took us to sites historical and new, and topped it all off by taking us to Din Tai Fung for an awesome lunch at this Taiwanese dumpling institution. A great day was had by all!
