Split - Diocletian's Palace + Salona with a private local guide
Two locations, glorious at the time when the Romans ran the show, still testify to the greatness of that ancient civilization.
Diocletian's Palace in Split - included on UNESCO's World Heritage List - is a unique monument in the world. Where else can you find a retirement home/palace of a Roman emperor?
After the fall of the Roman Empire life went on in Split. Time went on and the different nations conquered this area but the Roman architecture survived along with all the architectural additions of the centuries that followed.
Salona is a different story. The archeological site of what once was the greatest city of this Roman province called Dalmatia remains full of the Roman spirit. Take a walk among the ruins of the basilicas where Christianity blossomed. There are sarcophagi and gravestones to be found every step of the way, an amazing amphitheater and so much more.
You'll feel like time has stopped here and you'll become a Roman citizen, if only just for awhile.
This tour will be a kind of time travel.
We'll visit two locations which proudly tell their stories. Both will "talk" about ancient Romans but their "fate" was different. In Salona time, kind of, just stopped, so you'll get a chance to walk in the shoes of a gladiator (or, better to say, sandals) or play some other role in this "story of Rome". "The scenography" will blow you away; remains of what once were spectacular basilicas, the amazing amphitheater of Salona, sarcophagi on every step of our way. . .
Split will also tell you it's Roman tale. But, here life continued, so we'll talk about rulers that came later, see Romanesque buildings, Gothic and Renaissance palaces and so much more. You will understand why Split has a nickname "the living monument".

My wife and I had a really good time with Vjeran. He was incredibly nice and pleasant personality. We also loved the tour. He was an enthusiastic tour guide that engaged with us for the entire tour. I would suggest this tour to anyone visiting Split. It was like having the ruins of Rome all to yourself.
