Holy Trinity Lavra in Sergiev Posad (ex Zagorsk) with a private guide
The Holy Trinity Lavra is the main acting Orthodox monastery in Russia which has always played a significant role in the history of the country. In 1380, Prince Dimitry Donskoy of Moscow came here to seek St. Sergius' blessing before liberating his native land from the Mongol yoke. "In the land of Moscow and all over the world there is no other monastery equal to this one…" - Archdeacon Paul of Aleppo wrote after his visit to The Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra in the 17th century.
Nowadays, the small city of Sergiev Posad (ex Zagorsk) located 70 km from Moscow attracts thousands of local and international visitors interested in the history of Russian Orthodox Church.
It takes visitors about 1, 5 hours to get to the Lavra from Moscow. The monastery was founded in 1337 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, who built a wooden church in honour of the Holy Trinity in a deep dark forest. The Cathedral of Holy Trinity (1422) is the spiritual and historical centre of the monastery. It is the place where the holy relics of St. Sergius are kept in the shrine made in 1585 by orders of Ivan the Terrible. This is also the place firmly associated with another Russian Saint, the great artist Andrey Rublev. The largest structure of the complex is the Cathedral of the Assumption. By the north-western wall of the cathedral there is the burial vault of the Godunov family. The Chapel-over-the Well was built at the end of the 17th century over the spring, which shot up during the repair of the porch of the Assumption Cathedral in 1644. Many pilgrims were cured by this water.

This was a most memorable day for us with Natalia. She brought to life the history of the monastery and church complex. With her driver, we toured outside of Moscow as she spoke of sites along the way to Sergiev Posad. We so enjoyed speaking with her about Russian life and sharing our own background. She is an experienced guide with extensive knowledge and easy rapport. Thank you , Natalia for such a special day! Fran and Hal from Hawaii
