From north to south and back through mountains and sea
The most famous gorge in Crete, Greece and probably Europe. Visiting it involves a 16 km walk, from an altitude of 1250m at the White Mountains leading down to Agia Roumeli and the Libyan Sea. Its natural and cultural value led to the creation of the Natural Park of Samaria.
Around six hours is a good walking time for this gorge. But this is not a hiking contest! We are here to enjoy and feel this beautiful place, observe its impressive rock formations and their inhabitants: birds such as the Bearded vulture and the Griffon vulture looking for their prey or even the Cretan wild goat. It's time to enjoy the smell of phrygana and aromatic herbs used by Cretans for their taste but also their therapeutic properties.
A couple of extra hours for stops and a picninc in the gorge will give you a full experience, so make sure you bring light snacks!
Once we get to Agia Roumeli and the Libyan Sea we will take the boat to beautiful Sougia where our car will pick us up.
From north to south and back!
From Chania we will drive to Omalos, the entrance of Samaria gorge (1 hr). It will take us 7-8 hours to cross the gorge, inluding stops and light lunch (bring your snacks!). We will reach Ag. Roumeli (Libyan Sea) and walk to the port where we will take the boat to Sougia (45 mins). From Sougia we will drive back to Chania.

My son (age 22) and I had a fantastic day hiking the Samaria Gorge with Mel. She arrived at 6:30 at our hotel in Chania to set out for the gorge, allowing us to get there before most of the tour bus groups arrived. Mel's expertise is in animal behavior, but she also has deep knowledge about the plant life in the region. Mel was equally happy trekking full speed down the gorge or stopping for a period to watch the wildlife (we we very lucky to see a pair of Kri Kri goats). Two thumbs up from us!
