Americas Dead Sea and Mountain of Love
Salvation Mountain has been described it as a unique and visionary sculpture, a national treasure. Profoundly strange and beautifully accessible, it is worthy of the international acclaim it receives. The artwork is made of adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint. It encompasses numerous murals and grottos. With the passing of its original creator in 2014, it's only a matter of time before Salvation Mountain will become unsalvageable.

The Salton Sea was formed by an engineering project accident in 1905 that sent water from the Colorado River to the sea bed, the Salton Sea became the state's biggest lake. Developers saw opportunity in the accidental lake, billing it as the Salton Riviera. The ecosystem rapidly began to deteriorate due to that lack of drainage. The signs of a popular resort destination still dot the other-worldly landscape but they exist in a state of decay.
This once in a lifetime tour meets at the La Quinta Historical Society for brief overviews of the Salton Sea/Salvation Mountain tour. A one hour ride with stops at Bombay Beach with half an hour of selfies at Salvation Mountain and a brief visit to Slab City, made famous in the movie "Into the Wild"
Along the way, you will learn about how the largest body of water in California was mistakenly created. How it became a water sports playground mecca in the desert and what suddenly transformed the Salton Sea into a watery wasteland.
