Abdeen Royal Palace - Royal Cemetery - Sultan Hassan Mosque
In 1805 Mohamed Ali from Albania took over Egypt and established a dynasty who ruled until 1952. In the 1860s King Ismail built a model of Paris in Downtown Cairo, thus making Cairo one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Ismail also created the Suez Canal, linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.
To impress his friends, who would participate in the opening of the Canal, Ismail built the amazing Abdeen Palace where they could stay. Built in the 1870s, Abdeen palace cost 650. 000 pounds. The furniture alone cost 2 million pounds!!
The palace is currently under restoration; you can see the beautiful gardens, two kiosks - where Egyptian kings used to have afternoon tea and listen to music - and three museums that have remarkable royal collections.
Proceed to the beautiful Royal Cemetery of Mohamed Ali and his children, namely Al-Rifaie Mosque - one of the most amazing mosques in Cairo. The Cemetery houses the graves of this Royal family and also the tomb of the Shah of Persia, Mohamed Reza Pahlavi.
