The "City of Bergamot citrus fruit", at the heart of the Mediterranean area, on a 50-years old 500 car!
Situated on the southern tip of the Italian peninsula, facing Sicily, REGGIO is the place where, some 3500 years ago, the name "Italy" was first used. It had been inhabited by several AUSONIAN-ITALIC people before GREEK arrived, around 743 BC. Rhégion was a Polis of Magna Græcia and an important maritime, commercial and cultural centre, with the presence of academies of art, philosophy and science. Famous ancient historian and geographer Strabo described it as an «illustrious city».
Rhegium allied with the ROMANS and, in 551 AD, became a BYZANTINE Metropoli and cultural centre. After the ARAB period it passed under the NORMANS, the SWABIANS and ARAGONESE and ANGEVIN rules, before being a part of the SPANISH crown. Between 1759-1861, except a brief period of FRENCH rule, Reggio was under the BOURBONS of Naples and in 1847 has been described as «one vast garden, and doubtless one the loveliest spots to be seen on Earth» by the writer and painter Edward Lear. Reggio ideally represents the whole Mediterranean.
Starting at the chosen meeting place we will drive along the sea promenade, known as "the most beautiful kilometre in Italy", and its open-air botanical gardens going to the upper part of the city. We will briefly stop at: ancient Greek tombs; the open-air modern theatre facing the Straits; 5th cent. BC Walls; ancient Roman Baths; the Cathedral; the Norman-Aragonese Castle with its 15th cent. towers; the Neo-Byzantine Ottimati Church; the central square, which includes underground archæological excavations; some handsome Neo-Classical, Neo-Gothic and Liberty style buildings (19th-20th cent) along the way; the remains of Griso-Laboccetta sanctuary (6th cent BC). We will proceed to either the upper part of the town at San Paolo alla Rotonda church on Reggio Campi or the higher Pentimele hill to have a complete view of Reggio.
Please bear in mind Traffic and unavailable Parking places may sometimes not allow me to be together with you during the stops: please consider the Reggio walking tour option.
