Close-up look at real life for Alaskans
What is like to be an Alaskan? What is like to live in Ketchikan year-round, not just visit in summer? What does it mean an Alaskan? This tour aims to answer those big questions with a walk through the unique sights and sounds, (and maybe even smells!) of Ketchikan's oldest neighborhoods—Downtown and Newtown.
Ketchikan residents may live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, but we also face a large number of unique challenges: we live on an isolated island with less than forty miles of highway. We put up with a near-constant deluge of rain (150-200 inches per year). We have to protect our pets from predators, and our trash from bears. Many of us reach our homes with long staircases, steep driveways, or boardwalk streets. Life here is expensive, but we think being in Alaska is priceless.
We'll explore all these ideas and more during our close-up look at real life in Ketchikan.
We will walk through the Downtown and Newtown neighborhoods, starting with one or the other depending on the starting point of our tour along the cruise ship docks.
Interesting sights along the way include Ketchikan's unique trestle streets, stairways, boardwalks, early-20th-century architecture, float planes, ravens, eagles, favored areas for bears, and much more.
Depending on your interest and the time available, we can also visit the Tongass Historical Museum and nearby Creek Street Historic District.
