Patrick is so knowledgable and passionate about Japan and her cultures/history.. we have learnt so much in the tour and really appreciate his careing and thoughtful attitude... he plans the tour well and the 8-hour walking tour was enjoyable and educational/informative. He brought us to a local small soba noodle shop for lunch which we could not find it ourselves for sure ... the owner was very nice and the quality was so good ; We wanted to go back again already . Strongly recommend him!

We had a great custom made tour with Patrick today. We exchanged several emails beforehand in discussing and agreeing our needs, and he was happy to make changes before agreeing to the actual tour. Today, he kept us on track timewise without us ever feeling rushed. He gave us a good amount of historical information but not more than we wanted. He was happy for us to take a break when we flagged, and patient when we wanted to take multiple photos! Thoroughly recommend - we saw so many little details.
The tour was very educative and accommodating. The tour guide was very friendly and knowlegable on Japan's culture abd history. If you're a family with teenagers or grown up children who loves exploring Japan's history and culture, this tour is highly recommended
Patrick was fantastic, extremely knowledgeable and showed us sites we would never have known were there. Highly recommend booking this tour.

The most extraordinary 2 days around Tokyo with Patrick. He's a walking encyclopedia on Japanese history and has a very humbling appreciation for both Shinto and Budhaism. Once the history of japan and Edo are explained the city makes so much sense. Patrick's choice of lunch venues is wonderful - little family run eateries with delicious food. And you'll be introduced to businesses that have been in families for generations and in the same location. You'll see Tokyo as no travel guide will show. Enjoy!!

Our tour was fun and informative. We learned about Japanese culture, morés and history. Patrick was very flexible so we got as much in as possible considering our time constraints and the weather. There was a little of everything included ...a train ride, a cab ride, a pagoda, a tea house, a local market, a large department store...and more!
Patrick is the ultimate guide. His scope of knowledge in Japanese culture & history is no less than astounding. He's also a warm, considerate person. Above everything else, his honesty concerning monetary matters is to be commended. I'll recommend him as ESSENTIAL for whoever wants a depth tour of Japan.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thank you Dan, Nina, and Elsa, you were all a 5-star group! Your kind comment are very much appreciated! I learned a lot from you all and enjoyed your company tremendously. I would travel anywhere with you anytime! Hope to see you all in Japan again! Patrick

Patrick's historical and cultural tour brought our trip to Tokyo to life. We loved every minute, learned a ton, and saw much more than we could have seen without him. Highly recommended!

Patrick was our guide in Tokyo for 2 days in Sept '17. He was very well prepared for what we wanted to see and arranged by previous emails. Each day's pace was easy for us slower-moving Seniors to handle. His planning was perfect. He showed us Tokyo of the people, just what we wanted to see, where they live, work and shop, as well as tourist destinations, like shrines. He was a wealth of information on history, culture and customs. A plus was lunch in typical Japanese restaurants. Don & Phyllis Rochen

Great tour that provided the cuktural context for the sites we visited. Patrick is knowledgeable and engaging in his commentary. This is not a tour of the top rated Trip Advisor sites but rather a view of Tokyo through its history. Patrick also provided excellent recommendations for shopping and dining. I loved it!

Patrick was a great tour guide - highly informative - great historical background as a prelude to the tour - things we wouldn't have garnered on our own, but which provided an entirely different perspective to sights seen. Really enjoyed the traditional Japanese lunch. We would recommend Patrick to anyone who wants to experience a less "touristy" point of view.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Hello Kim, Thank you for your kind review! Despite the heat, I am glad that you enjoyed your tour. Don’t forget to send me your post address so I can send you the photos that I took of you! Best regards, and thank you! Patrick

Patrick showed up on time at our hotel ready for our tour. We seemed to get bogged down with obscure history from the start and the tour followed that same path. He seemed to really dislike tourists and tourism in Japan and kept us away from tourist areas which we really enjoyed after finding them on our own later in the trip. I feel Patrick has a wealth of knowledge but has a hard time simplifying and getting the point across quickly.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thank you, I appreciate your comment and regret that I did not come up to your expectations. Most clients agree that geographical & historical orientation helps them get more out of their visit and would not say that Japanese history is obscure. Hardly disliking tourists, rather its the trivialization of culture and society that are far too common in the industry today. In proper context they are fine. Regretfully, I failed to get that nuance across to you. I’m glad that you enjoyed rest of your visit!

We had the pleasure of having Patrick as our tour guide for 4 days, 2 in Tokyo, 1 Nikko, 1 Kamakura. I wouldn't call Patrick a guide rather an "experience creator", and a walking encyclopedia that truly brought a wealth of knowledge to our trip. He is absolutely wonderful! His background in history and teaching are apparent and helpful, since he makes learning easier. He is very organized, time manages and professional, yet allows and accounts for enough time to enjoy and take sites in at a leisurely pace

Patrick was our guide over two days for walking tours of Tokyo. He is an incredible source of information both of Japan's history and about the mores of Japanese people and their culture. He gave us two very full days taking us to many sites to local restaurants. He gave us historical background to every place we visited. He is patient about answering all our questions and really looked out for us. He offered to make restaurant reservations in kyoto for us as well as recommendations of places to visit.

We had a remarkable day with Patrick. His unique perspective on Japanese culture and history provided some amazing insights which we would never have discovered on our own. For anyone who is genuinely interested in learning more about Japan and Tokyo, rather than just sightseeing, I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Patrick was fantastic! The tour was excellent. He provided so much background on Japan, the culture, the religions and the feudal history. The tour was very enlightening and I would strongly recommend Patrick to tourists interested in an in depth understanding of Tokyo and its place in Japanese history from a cultural perspective. I will definitely book future tours with Patrick. He is an excellent resource. There si so much more to see and learn!

Patrick is the ideal tour guide. He's knowledgeable about Japanese history, culture, language, and he's lived in Japan for a very long time so he knows his way around so flawlessly that we had the best views everywhere we went. He is also courteous, engaging, pleasant, and, overall, an enjoyable person to spend the day touring with. We learned so much from Patrick not only about the sights we saw, but also small cultural nuances that we would never have known otherwise. 10/10

Patrick was terrific. The history he imparted to us was informative and insightful; the locations we walked to were very interesting. Highly recommended.
It was a marvellous experience. We enjoyed every moment of it. Patrick was extremely knowledgeable about the area, knew every detail and give very useful insights. Highly recommend everyone coming to Tokyo for the first time

We were a family of 15 ages 75 to 7 the youngest. Patrick was the best choice, a "god send"to guide us. Would have been a nightmare without him. The biggest challenge was moving us since he was limited with me with a walker and dealing with different age groups. We visited the sights of Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima,Niyajima in 4 days. Traveled by private van, bullet train, public transportation, ferry, taxi cabs. Learned the "face and soul" of Japan thru Patrick's tour. Patrick was everything you can wish for!
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Sally, you and your family was the best! I enjoyed everyone and hope that they all had a good time. I hope, too, that you all enjoyed your photos! Let me know if your grandson , Dean, found a Japanese flag. If not, I can send you one. Let me know! Take care, and I hope to see you all again!, and thank you!

A very thoughtful tour that would be well liked by an history fans. It was a great way for us to orient ourselves to the city. Our tour despite the rain was really good. It was really nice to have our native language for the tour.

Excellent tour! Patrick makes sure to provide you with historical, political, and cultural context to everything that he shows you. From emperial palace to stationary. This helps you see things from an entirely different prospective. He also took us to a great sobe place and showed us the correct way to eat those noodles. Our biggest regret was that he wasn't available to spend another day with us. Highly recommend!

Patrick was knowledgeable and did more than expected or required. He took photos of us and said he would send additional information about things we were interested in. We'd recommend him to friends. Definitely a 5 star guide.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Ken and Mary-Lynne were five-star visitors and I enjoyed my day with them as we talked about Japanese history and the Midas’s role. It was a great day together that ended too soon over maguro donburi and a cold draft! Thank you Ken and Mary-Lynne, I hope you enjoy your photos when they arrive!

Spent a wonderful day with Patrick in March. He did a fantastic job of describing the history of Toyko to my 2 kids (10 and 12) and personalizing it to their interests. He was also very helpful with recommending a driver and excellent restaurant in Kyoto. His deep knowledge of Japanese history and culture, and gift for skillfully translating it to a Western audience is a treasure.

Patrick was informed about Japan, however did not handle the logistics of the tour as well as we would have liked. It was a lengthy introduction that delayed us from meeting up with the other two and Patrick should have given a chance to understand why the delay occurred. explained and or apologized as to why we were so late compared
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thank you for your comment, I appreciate even less than positive ones. It should be noted that 2 additional people were added at the last moment, and I did not know they would not be at the hotel at start time. It was unclear when and where we would meet. As adults they knew when and where the tour was to begin and I tried to accommodate as much as possible. I was also disappointed when they left 1/3 into the day without even a good bye or thank you. I even extended the tour so you could meet them later
Impressively knowledgeable about history and geopolitics of Japan and the region. Intense character, fast walker and a master of Tokyo subway system. Patrick can give an honest Western perspective on Japanese society and its issues. Prepare to be tired by the end of the day!
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thank you Leonardo and Brittney! It was a pleasure to spend the day with you in Tokyo. Hope to see you again!

Patrick is a historian, a decades-long Tokyo resident and a native-born American. The combination means you'll have an insightful and interesting guide who can explain deep cultural and historic points in English easily. We learned a lot and really enjoyed the time that we spent with him -- definitely one of the best all-day guides we've ever used. Come prepared to walk, though -- we covered a lot of Tokyo, mostly on foot with some subways and trains.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Hello Mike, Thank you for your kind review. It was a pleasure meeting you both and having the pleasure to spend the day together. I hope that you enjoy your photos, and that I will see you over this way again!
Patrick was great! We did a very comprehensive all-day tour of Tokyo, with Patrick collecting us right on schedule at Narita Airport. He had pre-loaded transit passes for my wife and me, and we lost count of how many times we were on and off the very efficient subway. As a native speaker of English he was able to answer all our questions concisely and with the interesting perspective of an expat. He also had well-informed opinions on our million questions about daily life in the country. Hire Patrick!
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thank you for your kind words. You both were a pleasure to spend the day with and I hope that your next visit will be longer! All the best to your both. Patrick

This was the perfect tour for us. Patrick managed to compress a day tour into the time we had available during an airport layover. We got a satisfying first glimpse of Tokyo history and culture, and made it back to the airport for our flight home. Patrick is knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly. Highly recommended.

Patrick provided an excellent historical, geographic, and cultural overview of Tokyo. His tour took us to major sights and several very interesting neighborhoods not on most tours. His Japanese language skills are strong. His restaurant and travel advice were excellent. We learned a lot and enjoyed our time with Patrick.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: My thanks to Daniel and his family. It is not everyday that I have so well informed and thoughtful of guests when it comes to Japanese history and culture as he and his family were. It would be a pleasure and honour to see you all again!
My family and I truly enjoyed a 11-hr day trip to Mount Hakone and its scenic vicinity. It was a trip using the various modes of transport including the latest Shinkansen, local trains and buses and the funicular Swiss-designed train ride down the steep mountain. Patrick lives in Japan the last 43 years and is probably the rare few English/Japanese speaking tour guides who possessed a degree in Japanese history and lived its local culture. Explained the Edo period very well along the way up Hakone.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thank you Ronald! You and your family were a pleasure to spend the day with. I hope that I can make it to Singapore, I surely will try. I hope to see you in Japan again too and wish all the best to your daughter and her future adventure and study in Tokyo next year! I hope that you enjoy your photos. Patrick
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Jose, you were great to spend the day with. I enjoyed your company very much and hope that you are both over this way again! Thank you!
Patrick did a fantastic job introducing us to Japan. We met him on our first day for a walking/subway tour of the city. I love Edo period history and he was able to answer all of my questions.
A really enjoyable tour. Patrick's knowledge is excellent and the insight he gives in to the city and its history is informative and insightful. I had a one to one tour and the eight hours passed by so quickly. IHighly recommended for anybody wanting to gain a historical insight to Tokyo in the company of a great guide eho knows his stuff!

We could not have asked for a better guide than Patrick. He not only met our expectations but went beyond.
Mark GisseUnited States
Patrick was a pleasure to work with before and during the tour. He was very knowledgeable of the city and you could tell that he liked what he was doing and not just working for a paycheck. There were more historical facts than we wanted but I know if we would have told him he would have altered the tour to meet our exact needs. He made sure we knew our transportation requirements at the end of the tour and helped us to get the most out of the time we had.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thank you for your kind comments! I am sorry about the overkill on the history of Tokyo, but even though Tokyo is a relatively young city, its history is rich in details and stories. I hope to see you all over here again in the not too distant future.
This was a very interesting walking tour of Tokyo. Patrick gave great historical background of the city and how it developed. We had a wonderful day and enjoyed it thoroughly. The sights were well chosen and really represented a nice overall sampling of the attractions in Tokyo. Thoroughly enjoyed lunch with Patrick and the opportunity to hear what it is like to live in Japan. Would certainly highly recommend Patrick.

Patrick gave my son and I a two day tour of Tokyo that was outstanding. As travelers from NY, we likes the fact that there were no language barriers since he is from Seattle He knows Tokyo like the back of his hand , and effortlessly shared his knowledge with us. If you are traveling to Tokyo for the first time , a tour guide is a must. Book with Patrick , and you will get a first class tour. D.P. NYC

You have my families unconditional endorsement of Patrick as your guide. The five of us had a delightful day touring Tokyo with him. Patrick has fully immersed himself into the Japanese language and culture, and he is a treasure trove of history that brings to life Tokyo and Japan. As an anthropologists, my standards for cultural tours are fairly high, and Patrick met and exceeded my expectations. You will not be disappointed.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: The Cook Family was a pleasure, and if all my guests were as engaging and interested in Japan as they were, not to mention fun, I could not ask for more.

Patrick has a wonderfully wide range of knowledge and the ability to impart history, facts and figures in an interesting manner. He helped us better understand Japanese history, culture, religion, etc. He also helped us understand everyday life in Japan. We spent three days with Patrick and would have spent a couple more if time had allowed. We highly recommend Patrick.

Patrick was an excellent tour guide. We learned a great deal of Japanese history while also really enjoying the tour. Patrick was very good with myself and my husband as well as our children. He has a very informative set tour but was also able to veer from the tour and take us to a few places we really wanted to see. He also took us to an excellent "off the beaten path" restaurant that we enjoyed very much. I would highly recommend Patrick as a tour guide.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: The Murphys were a great bunch to guide for. They were engaged, had lots of questions, and their children were interested in the history and culture, and spoke twin-code. One of the pleasures of being a guide are the people I meet, and the Murphy family was a real pleasure whom I hope to see again!
Patrick is an expert on Tokyo/Japanese history with a kind and understanding way of conveying his vast storehouse of knowledge. Very important to our quest, was to find a guide with a background in Japanese arts and culture and Patrick is a renowned artist in his right. We very much enjoyed our tour and quality time with Patrick, and look forward to the next opportunity.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: I enjoy all of my clients, but Frank was a special treat as he brought with him a storehouse of knowledge on Japan along with an inquisitive desire to discover more. Frank is an accomplished Chanoyu partitioner who was not satisfied with just learning the secrets and skills of a tea master, but built his own beautiful teahouse in the middle of woods with all of the details one would find in any tea house in Japan. The pleasure of the day spent together was mine!
We'd happily take another tour with Patrick. His encyclopaedic knowledge of Tokyo and it's history was completely engaging. He went out of his way to ensure our comfort, and to meet our needs
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: The Durhams were delightful guests. THey were engaged and interested in Japanese history and culture and it is i who would be pleased to have them as clients again!

Patrick was an excellent tour guide. I would give the tour a 5 stars out of 5 stars. His knowledge of Japanese history and of Tokyo was quite amazing. He was very well organized and really showed us a lot in the one day that we were with him. It was nice to have someone that spoke American English and could also speak fluent Japanese. I would highly recommend Patrick and his one day history tour of Tokyo.
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: It is always a pleasure to have such interesting clients like the Meerwarths. They were great company and were interested in the culture and history which made my job a pleasure. Thanks Thomas, hope to see you again!

Patrick is a terrific guide. His knowledge of Japanese history makes the tour vivid and interesting. He even brought along his camera and took photos of our family during the tour and he is going to send us a copy of the photos! We thoroughly enjoyed our 1-day history tour with Patrick and highly recommend him
TOUR GUIDE RESPONSE: Thanks goes to Sheryl and her wonderful family. They were great companions and their interest in Japan and Japanese history was inspiring! I hope to see them in Japan again soon!

We took the 1-Day History Tour of Tokyo on June 30th. Patrick was an amazing guide! We were really impressed by his knowledge of the city's history. The tour was educational without being boring. We particularly enjoyed Edo Castle and the beautiful strolling garden that we visited in the afternoon. Patrick was very thoughtful, even showing us the proper entrance to take at Tokyo Station for our shinkansen trip later that week. We highly recommend his tour, but make sure you're in shape! It's worth it.
