11,600 Feet High Walking/Birding Trail, Pululahua volcano and Middle of the World in One Day
Only an hour from Quito at 11, 600 feet (Quito - 9, 300 ft. ) but seemingly a hundred miles away is the Yanacocha Reservation with an easy hiking/walking, bird watching trail. You don't need to be a bird watcher to enjoy. Often shrouded in afternoon clouds/mist the mornings are often sunny with gorgeous Andes vistas. Half a mile higher than Quito, the weather is often very different. While this reserve is a favorite of serious bird watchers with their powerful camera lenses, it is also a favorite of travelers who want to escape huge Quito and take an easy hike in magnificent silence. There is a tiny, Indian run restaurant for a meal or snack and a very nice bird exhibition. I combine this early morning visit with a Middle of the World afternoon and lunch and a visit to Pululahua volcano where you can view it from the rim or drive down into the farm area filling the crater, one of only two active in the world with people living in it. Price quoted is for up to 3.
Up to 10 can go - see below "What's Extra"
Pick up at your hotel in Quito
Take bypass around the huge city, turn off and start driving up, up, up, to 11, 600 ft. and the Yanacocha Reserve
We walk the easy mountain rim trail almost certainly seeing many hummingbirds and, probably, larger birds and unusual mountain plants, some with leafs almost as large as you. After an hour and possibly breakfast or snack in the lodge, we head down to Middle of the World.
Spend about an hour and a half here touring this fascinating site. I will take you next door to see the real equator line and will prove it when our iPhones' GPS show exactly 00°00'00"! You can try to balance an egg on a nail; observe water in a sink swirl in different directions depending on which side of the equator line the sink is placed!
Eat lunch in one of many restaurants ranging in price or simply stop and buy $3 delicious pork from Indian roadside stands, the favorite of many travelers.
Drive to beautiful Pululahua Crater to view from the rim or go into it.
