During centuries Puerto de Soller has been an strategic area. Its connection with some of the towns in the Sierra de Tramuntana and the monastery of LLuc was made through the stone path wich goes parallel to Biniaraix ravine.
This geographical isolation supposed for inhabitants to struggle with pirates which supposed to live under their continuous threat. 11th of May 1561, the most significant day in the history of Soller and for its people.
To protect Puerto de Soller and in fact the whole island a defensive system was created to warn inhabitants from the pirate attacks.
Join me on this tour and you will discover all the events related to the 11th of May 1561, the defensive system created and the peculiarities that have characterised Puerto de Soller due to its special geography.
Water and food are essentials products to be carried out during the whole tour. It is important to use proper trekking equipment as well as sunglasses, tan cream and a cap.
We will explore two different areas.
A hiking route where we will talk about the 11th of May 1561, the history of "ses valentes dones" (the brave women) finishing in the Repic Beach.
The second part of the tour will lead us to a defensive tower called Sa Torre Picada discovering its history, functions and how was integrated in the whole network of towers.
