The river and the chain of lakes reveal the area's geology, history, commerce, politics, and arts.

In downtown Minneapolis, we will walk over the Stone Arch Bridge, built in 1882-83 by James J. Hill for the Great Northern Railroad. Now a pedestrian walkway, the bridge overlooks St. Anthony Falls, which powered the flour and saw mills that formed the economic basis for the city.

Nearby is the Guthrie Theater, in which we will see photos of over 50 years of plays.

We will then drive along the Mississippi River's only gorge to Minnehaha Falls and Fort Snelling. Built in the 1820s, the Fort overlooks the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers.

Next we will visit Indian Mounds Park overlooking downtown St. Paul.

Then we will visit the State Capitol, view the St. Paul Cathedral, and drive down Summit Avenue, with over 300 Gilded Age mansions.

Summit will take us back to Minneapolis' Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, a 50 mile route along Minnehaha Creek, the Chain of Lakes, Theodore With Park, and Victory Memorial Parkway.

The trip will conclude at Minneapolis' newly refurbished Sculpture Garden.
