A private tour at the Memorial with your personal Guide
On March 22, 1933, a few weeks after Adolf Hitler had been appointed Reich Chancellor, a concentration camp for political prisoners was set up in Dachau. This camp served as a model for all later concentration camps and as a "school of violence" for the SS men under whose command it stood. In the twelve years of its existence over 200. 000 persons from all over Europe were imprisoned here and in the numerous subsidiary camps. More than 42. 000 were murdered. On April 29th 1945, American troops liberated the survivors.
Dachau was not only the first concentration camp but it would also become the first international concentration camp memorial site in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1965. It has become an important place of learning, memory and remembrance for thousands of visitors each year.

My husband and I were on a Viking River cruise and took a few days off the boat. We rode the train to the lovely old town of Dachau. Franz picked us up right on time the next morning and took us to the different sites outside of town connected with the Dachau concentration camp. Franz explained much about this area and his knowledge of how this dark time in history started gave us a better understanding. He then delivered us to Munich train station and suggested a great place to eat. Anita Kapperman
