A Guided Private Tour Will Completely Demystify Our Subway System
It's right there under your feet, you probably ride it every day, but how much do you know about this city's amazing subway system. I will give you the secret history and inside story of the creation of the original 1904 subway line and how it grew into the most extensive transportation system in the world. All the art, all the history, all the technical breakthroughs, all the "whys" and all the shenanigans that went into this spectacular achievement. A unique experience for seasoned locals or visitors to our fair city.
Get a look at the subway that few people, even lifelong New Yorkers, fail to recognize. This tour only explores the areas of the system that are open to the public but in most cases overlooked. We do not go into the tunnels or any area that is not open to the public. Tours by Locals, The City of New York, The Metropolitan Transit Authority and their vast legal teams would frown upon the idea of people on a tour getting arrested, injured or killed.
We start in lower Manhattan at the Municipal Building, we then work our way up along the original 1904 system up through Times Square, and end at Grand Central Terminal. We end with a discussion of the exterior of the Terminal.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: In the colonnaded area with the white tiled ceiling on the south side of the David Dinkins Municipal Building. The address for map purposes is 1 Centre Street, NY NY 10007. This is at the intersection of Centre and Chambers Streets.
End location: Grand Central Terminal, 42nd Street and Park Avenue.
Duration: 2 hours 30 min.
The tour is approximately 2 and 1/2 hours. The reason I say "approximately" is there are factors such as the whims of the subway system that I have no control of. And since I encourage it, questions I receive can take up time. This is a tour for you, not me so if you have any questions, do not be shy - ask. Other factors include the speed at which the group moves, etc. These are things that I have no control over but I will try to keep the tour within the 2 and 1/2 hour window.
Obviously we will be using the subway system.
A life long "subway nerd" and one of the greatest guides on this island.
Estimated Local Cash Needed
3 USD - The cost of one ride on the subway is $2.75. We enter the system once and do not exit the system until we get to the Grand Central Terminal portion of the tour.
The cost of a single ride on the subway. Any food, beverages, legal or medical fees, bail postings or souvenirs.
